If you are after a weekend just for the two of you, it is hard to beat the Brecon Beacons. Quiet lanes, big skies, a waterfall for company and nowhere to be. Here is roughly how we would plan it.
Where to stay

A slow morning
No alarm. Breakfast on the balcony with the sound of the river, a coffee, and maybe a heron for company down on the water. The whole point of a weekend like this is to do very little, beautifully.
A walk together
When you are ready, there is a walk to suit every mood. The canal towpath is flat and easy, hand in hand. If you want a view to remember, the Sugar Loaf is a gentle enough climb with the whole of the Usk Valley laid out below. Llangorse Lake is a pretty, level circular stroll if you would rather keep it easy.
Dinner somewhere special
The area is quietly brilliant for food. The Walnut Tree near Abergavenny holds a Michelin star, and The Hardwick and the Felin Fach Griffin are both a real treat. Closer to home, the Bear Hotel in Crickhowell is a lovely old coaching inn. Book ahead at the weekend.
