There is a reason this corner of the Brecon Beacons is known as Waterfall Country. Within a short drive of the cabins you can walk to some of the finest falls in Wales, and one of them you can actually walk behind. Here are the ones we send our guests off to find.
Right from the doorstep
You do not have to go far at all. Our cabins sit on the banks of the River Crawnon, with its own little waterfall tumbling past the balcony. Step out of the door and the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal towpath is a two minute stroll away, which makes for a lovely flat walk or cycle along the water if you fancy something gentle.
The Four Waterfalls Walk
This is the famous one, and worth the short drive. The circular route near Ystradfellte takes in four waterfalls, and the star of the show is Sgwd yr Eira, where the path leads right behind the curtain of water. It is around five miles over rocky ground, so wear proper boots and give yourself a few hours. It is at its most dramatic after a spell of rain.
Henrhyd Falls
The tallest waterfall in South Wales at around 90 feet, tucked into a wooded gorge near Coelbren. Film fans might recognise it as the entrance to the Batcave. It is a steep little path down and back up, but a short and rewarding one.
A few tips from us
- Sturdy footwear is a must. The paths are rocky and can be slippery near the water.
- Go after rain for the most impressive flow, but take care as the rocks are more slippery too.
- Autumn is our favourite season for it, when the woodland turns gold.
- Take a flask. Half the joy is a hot drink with the sound of the falls.
